How is the Curriculum Organised?
The National Curriculum was introduced into schools in Autumn 1989. Every child in school has access to the National Curriculum. In the Foundation Stage the areas of learning are: Language, Mathematics Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Creative Development, Physical Development, Personal and Social and Emotional Development.
The curriculum is made up of three core subjects, English, Maths and Science and foundation subjects, Geography, ICT, History, Design Technology, Music, Art, P.E., Religious Education, Personal, Social and Health Education.
Each subject has a statutory programme of study, which is sub bivided into a number of attainment targets, covering the range of knowledge, skills and understanding which children are expected to attain as they progress through school. Each attainment target has up to ten levels, extending into your child's secondary education. In Primary Schools, the levels of attainment for Key Stage 1 are between levels 1 - 3, with level 2 being the National Avwerage. In Key Stage 2, the levels of attainment fall within the rage of 2 - 5, with level 4 being the National Average.
Children are assessed at the end of the Summer Term using National assessment material. Children are then formally assessed using SAT tasks and tests, at seven (Year 2) and eleven (Year 6). Within school we also test on a yearly basis to chart the children's progress using non-statutory tasks.
